Help with Endnote

What is EndNote?

EndNote is a bibliographic citation manager that allows you to build a database of references, and use it to create bibliographies and format them in many citation styles.

Where can I download EndNote?

EndNote is available free of charge to Columbia current students, faculty, and staff. You may download Endnote from the AcIS server. You can save a shortcut of the EndNote program on your desktop. Or you can find the EndNote program from your Start menu and Programs. Here’s a flash movie to show you how to open the EndNote program and how to create your library. [flash movie demo: opening EndNote and creating personal Endnote libraries]

How can I add references to EndNote?

You can add references to EndNote in three ways:

What are connection files and filters?

Connection files and filters are programs that make EndNote compatible with a large number of databases.

What is the difference between connection files and filters?

Connection files are used to connect to remote databases through EndNote. Filters are used to import references found in databases searched outside of EndNote.

Where can I get connection files and filters?

When you download EndNote you also download a large number of connection files and filters. You may also find lists on Columbia’s EndNote page at: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/help/howto/endnote/  or at the EndNote Web site at: http://www.endnote.com/support/enconnections.asp and http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp .

What are output styles?

Output styles are bibliographic citation styles for a variety of disciplines. The EndNote Styles Collection includes more than 1,200 citation styles.  They are included in the EndNote program. You may also find a list of styles at the EndNote site at: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp

Can I use EndNote with Microsoft Word?

Yes, you can use EndNote with Microsoft Word. EndNote has a feature called Cite-While-You-Write which allows you to search for citations in EndNote and insert them into an Word document. EndNote will include your citations in the text and automatically generate a bibliography of those citations. [flash movie demo: using Endnote with Word]
