Interlibrary Loan Policy
What can students request via interlibrary loan?
Teachers College students may request items not owned by any of the Columbia Morningside Campus libraries. Students should search both TC and CU library catalogs before submitting a request to this service. Please note, there are many online journals in the the TC and CU Catalogs (also on the TC e-Journals A-Z list and CU e-Journals A-Z list) and this will save you the time of entering an invalid request. Requests are accepted for materials determined to be missing from Teachers College or Columbia. Requests are also accepted for books or articles from journals owned only by Columbia's Health Sciences Library (168th Street and Fort Washington Avenue).
What can faculty request via interlibrary loan?
Teachers College faculty may request any item they wish to read. We will assess each request and determine whether you need it for Reserve, or just wish to read it.
How do I request materials?
Enter the information about the item, such as author and title, volume, pages, and date on our Reserves System.
How Long Does It Take?
Generally, from a few days to four weeks, depending on the type of material being requested (photocopy or loan) and upon availability and location.
How Long Can Materials Be Kept?
Usually for four weeks. Renewals must be requested in person at the Services Desk, or online in advance of the due date noted on the book band. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Photocopies are free and may be kept.
How will I know that my request has been completed?
You will receive an email notifying you when your material is available for electronic download or for pick-up at the Services Desk.
How will my item be delivered?
Your request may be delivered in electronic format, viewable with Adobe Acrobat Reader, or your material may be picked-up at the Services Desk on the first floor of the Gottesman Libraries. To view items delivered in electronic format, you must login to the Reserves System.
What methods are used to deliver requested materials?
In most cases your request is sent to several libraries after it has been determined that they own the item. Sometimes we purchase a book that is requested if it is readily available and is germane to the collection. In some cases we may purchase an article or dissertation from a commercial supplier.
How can find out more information about my request?
Your Reserves System account indicates if your item is being fullfilled. You will also receive an email telling you that your request has been processed, which also includes the number of your request from our ILL Manager System. You can use that email to ask us a question about the status of your request or ask for a renewal.
