TESOL/ESL Resources at Teachers College

Materials pertaining to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) or English as a second language (ESL) can be found in a number of places in the library and through various online resources, and also elsewhere in the College.
  • The library's online catalog EDUCAT can be searched under the Library of Congress subject heading "English language--Study and teaching--Foreign speakers" (case and punctuation not essential) to find all materials in the collection pertaining to this subject, including books, journals (but not journal articles), curriculum materials, media, etc.  Curricula, or books on the subject of curriculum, are assigned the location indicator CURR; materials of this kind published from 1990 to present are shelved on the second floor of the library, and materials published earlier are shelved in the Closed Stacks and can be retrieved via an online request.
  • The ERIC database can be searched, using the Advanced Search option, by ERIC descriptor "English (Second Language)" (case and punctuation not essential) to find materials indexed by ERIC pertaining to this subject, and it is possible to refine the search by specifying geographic location (or, for U.S. materials only, indicating NOT the descriptor "foreign countries"); publication type (e.g., "051 guides: classroom: learner," "052 guides: classroom: teacher"); specific subject area; and other criteria.
  • The Kraus Curriculum Development Library provides access to a wide range of curriculum materials online and can be searched by Primary Section "Bilingual/English (Second Language)," by Subject, by Grade Level, by Issuing Agency, by State, by Country, and by several other criteria.
  • The Community English and Community Language Programs (CEP and CLP) at Teachers College provide English as a second language and foreign language instruction to adult learners, and serve as an on-site language education lab in which TESOL and Applied Linguistics faculty members and students teach, observe, and do classroom research.  The Programs' office, in Room 46E Horace Mann, maintains extensive collections of TESOL and ESL curriculum materials for the use of program participants.
