Living in the Chinese Cosmos: Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Popular Religion (2 NCTA Credits)Are you teaching about East Asia in world history, geography, literature, social studies or art? This course will help teachers gain a deeper understanding of the geography, history, culture, and contemporary issues of China, Japan, and Korea as identified in the New York State Social Studies Core Curriculum.
In this course teachers will:
- become familiar with major themes that enhance understanding of these cultures;
- explore instructional strategies and online materials for the classroom;
- design an implementation plan that integrates content knowledge about the countries of East Asia, with effective, thoughtful, and engaging instructional approaches based on Children First Reforms; and
- learn to use technology and web resources more effectively in the classroom.
This course is asynchronous. This means that participants work on their own time to complete weekly reading assignments and then post responses online. Each weekly session begins on a Wednesday and ends the following Tuesday evening; all participants should try to post by noon Monday for discussion and comment. Participants should expect to commit about four hours each week to readings, postings, and discussions.
