Book Talk: Teaching the Way Children Learn, Wednesday, 3/11, 5-7pm

Join us for a discussion with Beverly Falk, author of Teaching The Way Children Learn (Teachers College Press, NEA Professional Library, National Education Association, 2009). Endorsed by Deborah Meier, educational reformer, writer, and activist; Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Nel Noddings, Lee L. Jacks Professor of Child Education Emerita, Stanford University, Falk’s latest book is a valuable resource for pre and in-service teachers working within the inner city. Highlighting “images of possibility” within an urban school, Falk describes effective child-centered teaching, pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade, while addressing needs in classroom environment, project-based curriculum, standards, assessment, family involvement, and other key areas.

A graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, Beverly Falk is Professor and Head of the Graduate Program in Early Childhood Education at The School of Education, The City College of the City University of New York. Prior to her work at City College, she served in a variety of other educational roles - teacher, administrator, researcher, and consultant - at the school, district, state, and national level. Currently, she is the Editor of The New Educator, the quarterly journal published by Taylor and Francis in collaboration with The City College of New York's School of Education. She is the author of numerous books, including The Heart of the Matter: Using Standards and Assessment to Learn (Heinemann, 2000); The Power of Questions: A Guide to Teacher and Student Research (Heinemann, 2005; The Primary Language Record at P.S. 261: How Assessment Transforms Teaching and Learning (NCREST, 1993); The Bronx New School: Weaving Assessment into the Fabric of Teaching and Learning (NCREST, 1994); and Taking a Different Look: How the Primary Language Record Supports Teaching for Diverse Learners (NCREST, 1995). She has edited numerous volumes and contributed book chapters, refereed articles, book reviews, and other pieces pertinent to child-centered teaching; teacher education and professional development; teacher research; performance assessment; and school change.
