Incredibly Useful Databases (June)

Several database enhance teaching and research in support of academic programs at Teachers College.

APA PsycNet is a collection of research resources published by the American Psychological Association; included are: PsycArticles, full-text database of journals published by APA and other publishers in applied psychology, health, theory, research, social/personality, and other areas; PsycBooks, full-text database of APA books, classic books, and entries from the Encyclopedia of Psychology; PsycCritiques, full text reviews of current books and films; and PsycExtra, a bibliographic and full-text gray literature database (material written for professionals and disseminated outside of peer-reviewed journals, including: newsletters, magazines, newspapers, technical and annual reports, government reports, consumer brochures, and more).

Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunity assists writers in finding journals in which to be published. The index matches the characteristics of your manuscript to the topic areas the journal emphasizes, the type of review process, acceptance rate and number of internal and external reviewers. There is also extensive information on the style and format of most journals, in addition to special manuscript guidelines. The four accessible subject areas are: Educational Curriculum and Methods; Educational Psychology and Administration; Educational Technology and Library Science; and Psychology and Psychiatry.

Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database provides access to important and relevant information about Pre K-12 media of all types, including reviews from respected publications for those professionals who work with Pre K-12 media. The database contains both a search and a browse page. Search qualifiers include age, grade, category, publication date, genre, language, author/illustrator, series, and publisher. Reading metrics allows you specify lexile range, interest level, reading level, and point range. Special search qualifiers include professional/pre-K-12; awards/honors; and author/illustrator links. In the browse screen one can enter a keyword or explore by category (author, reviewer, subject, genre, classification, or text words).

Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Books, K-8 includes over 32,000 leveled books that are sortable by level, genre, series, or publisher; video clips of guided-reading classrooms in action; organizational and classroom management tips; suggested read-alouds for all grades; and professional development information for individuals and groups.

Source OECD is the publications portal of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that consists of books, periodicals, databases, working papers, statistics, and much more. Sections include OECD Statistics, Book Series, Books by Theme, Country Reports and Tables, Journals and Newsletters, Outlooks and Annuals, Reference and Looseleaf, Working Papers, Statistical Annuals, Statistical Periodicals, Statistics at a Glance, OECD Factbook, OECD Databases, IEA Databases, and the Future Trends Database. Topic areas include development, education, science and information technology, international trade data, economic indicators, guidelines for the testing of chemicals, and health and industrial data.
