Exhibition: Dimensions of PocketKnowledge, 9/1-11/18
PocketKnowledge houses over thirty-thousand documents, images, and works of art related to the Gottesman Libraries and Teachers College. In
Dimensions of PocketKnowledge there are four banners: "Hanging by a Thread," "Dock of the Bay," "Precise Measurements," and "Tending the Concrete Garden," each containing historic images found in the PocketKnowledge archive. Members of the Columbia University community can access the online digital archive, upload content, or comment on existing material.
Laurel Bybee, an intern at
EdLab, a research and development unit of the Gottesman Libraries, collected historic images from
PocketKnowledge to create this dimensional collage series.
Artist's Statement:
"This collage series reinterprets educational practices, artists’ sketches, and haunting historic images within a modern context. PocketKnowledge was my digital playground as I meandered through pages of images, finding rich textures and subtle details for layering. I hope my experiments in dimension and perspective emphasize the depth of the archive."
