Fall Film Series: Moon Sun Flower Game, Tuesday, 11/17, 4-5:30pm

The Gottesman Libraries is screening a series of documentary films that highlight timely international perspectives on education and tie in with current programs of study and research at Teachers College. Join us as we reflect on our role as educators in shaping education in and beyond the borders.

Film Synopsis:

  • Moon Sun Flower Game, Tuesday, 11/17, 4-5:30pm

  • The young Iranian poetess Forough Farrokhzad visited lepers in northern Iran and made an astounding documentary in 1962 entitled "The House is Black." Not only did it become highly influential, but Farrokhzad rescued a boy from the leprosy colony, taking him with her to live in bohemian Tehran. She was unmarried at the time and most likely the first Iranian woman on record to become a single parent.

Adopted son and poet in exile, Hossein Mansouri, looks for his roots in this subsequent documentary, Moon Sun Flower Game; the film unearths a real fairytale about social pariahs; the strength of the human spirit; and the magical power of words.

  • Naim and Jabar, Tuesday, 10/13, 4-5pm

  • Naim and Jabar is a film within the Faces of Change Collection from Documentary Educational Resources. Originally filmed in the town of Aq Kupruk, some 320 miles northwest of Kabul, the documentary follows the friendship of two teenage Afghan boys, as it unveils the nuances of family structure; formal and informal learning; and broader educational policies. Produced in 1974, it offers a compelling view of rural society and schooling in Afghanistan.

  • Young Arabs, Tuesday, 9/15, 4-5pm

  • Young Arabs takes viewers inside an elite boys preparatory school run by French-trained Jesuit priests in Cairo, Egypt. As faculty and students are roughly 60% Muslim and 40% Christian, so they present diverse perspectives on how to help lead the Middle East in a significant new direction; students quietly ponder the meaning of God, America, terrorism, marriage, the Middle East, and many other topics.
