New Acquisitions, Specially Funded

New Acquisitions, Specially Funded

Guide_for_Constructing_the_Letter_B.pngWith thanks to New York State and the Myers Foundations, as well as to librarians taking an active role in coordinated collection development, the Gottesman Libraries has strengthened research resources in areas that support academic programs and departments of Teachers College, Columbia University. Over the past two years, we have optimized use of government and charitable funding to build monographic holdings. In this article we describe key processes in the selection and acquistion of these resources and offer examples of newly purchased titles in academic year 2022-2023 to promote their usage.

Coordinated Collection Development Aid (CCDA) is a program available to participating libraries of the New York Metropolitan Library Council and is awarded to its members based upon their engagement in interlibrary loan and other resource sharing programs, including those provided through OCLC (like WorldCat, WorldShare, Illiad). This year we concentrated selections on English education, gifted education, learning analystics, and nursing education based upon course descriptions at Teachers College and our collecting scope to meet the needs of our students, faculty, and staff. We utilized a collection development tool, EbscoHost Collection Manager, to search for and review titles; checked our holdings in Educat+ and CLIO to avoid duplication; and reached out to faculty for their input before placing orders via GOBI Library Solutions. Once received, books and their linked bibliographic data were passed through our integrated library services platform and powered for searching, as well as full text access.

Librarians undertaking this work are: Ralph Baylor, Head of Reference and Reader Service; Becca Gates, Research and Instruction Librarian; Jennifer Govan, Library Director and Senior Librarian; Kalli Mathios, Head of Technical Services and Metadata Librarian; Tresha Antoine, Library Assistant; and Roshnara Kissoon, Reserves and Support Services Librarian. Iraida Torres, Manager of Operations (Library), assisted with submitting the CCDA application and tracking funding.

Books recently acquired are listed below with permalinks to their catalog records in Educat+ as well as publishers' permalinks for full text. We continue to honor METRO passes for access to books and other materials not held in participating member libraries and allow onsite use by our patrons, as well as by members of the reference and research library resources system.

Total awarded:  $10,240 (for Metro CCDA)

The Myers Foundations (formerly, the Florence H. and Eugene E. Myers Charitable Remainder Unitrust) continues to award art initiatives in areas of library need: acquisition, conservation, and exhibition support, as well as art purchases and commissions. Trust funds created since the 1990s by Colonel Eugene Myers, (TC MA, 1947, drawing, painting and graphics; instructor, 1940-1941) have allowed the Gottesman Libraries, as well as Art and Art Education program / Macy Gallery to provide quality programming and collections with a unique focus on art and art education. Fellow beneficiary institutions are Northwestern University, University of West Virginia, and University of North Dakota. Librarians underaking the selection and acquisition of art and art education books for Teachers College, Columbia University leveraged the same tools, Collection Manager and GOBI. Jennifer Govan, Kalli Mathios, and Tresha Antoine are key contributors.
