  • Join us for a CITED (Center for Innovation in Teacher Education and Development)-sponsored conversation on YPAR (Youth Participatory action Research) and teacher education! What does it mean to engage in transformative teacher education? What are the contributions of YPAR and critical literacies to transforming teacher education? In this conversation, Limarys Caraballo, Danielle Filipiak, Lauren Kelly, and Nicole Mirra will discuss various projects and help us consider how critical literacies and youth participatory action research (YPAR), a radical effort in education research to value the inquiry-based knowledge production of the youth who directly experience the educational contexts that scholars endeavor to understand, can help us epistemologically, methodologically, and pedagogically transform teacher education. Limeys Caraballo is Assistant Professor of English Education at Queens College. Her research focuses on students’ multiple identities and literacies, Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), and teaching English in diverse sociocultural contexts. Danielle Filipiak is a Doctoral Student in the English Education program at Teachers College at Columbia University. Danielle is interested in the multiple ways that students use literacy to navigate the hybrid and evolving contexts/landscapes around them. She has a decade of teaching experience and has served in roles such as: teacher organizer, consultant, NWP Urban Sites leadership team member, school board member, co-founder of the Detroit Educator Network, and member of the Detroit Future Media program, a digital justice initiative in Detroit looking to reinvent the practice and purpose of education. Lauren Leigh Kelly is Assistant Professor of Urban Teacher Education at Rutgers University. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Wesleyan University; her master's in Adolescent Education from St. John's University; and her doctorate in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Nicole Mirra is Assistant Professor of Urban Teacher Education at Rutgers University. She received her bachelor's degree in English from New York University; her master's in Secondary English Education from Pace University; her second master's degree in Education Policy & Management from Harvard University; and her doctorate in English Education from the Division of Urban Schooling at the University of California, Los Angeles. This event is co-sponsored by the The Center for Innovation in Teacher Education and Development atTeachers College, Columbia University. The panel will be introduced and moderated by Professor Mariana Souto-Manning, co-director with Professor Viv Ellis, Professor of Educational Leadership and Teacher Development at Kings College, London.   • End-of-Year Celebration: Programs in Anthropology, Tuesday, 4/24, 7-9:30pm
  • Time to mix and mingle with current and alumni master and doctoral students for an end-of-year celebration with the Programs in Anthropology! This event features interesting presentations by several current master students. Presentations of research work in a variety of areas will be accompanied by round table/small group discussion.
