Panel Talk: Narratives + Perspectives: Reclaiming [^OUR] Public Art!, Tuesday, 3/26, 6:30-8:30pm

In our current times, we need to acknowledge erasures and call for more inclusivity in how we commemorate our communities. Statues removed, buildings renamed, famous names recast as ignominious––these recent actions have presented us with opportunity. This present climate opens up spaces for broadening narratives that bring us different perspectives on our past.

 

Narratives + Perspectives: Reclaiming [^OUR] Public Art! brings together artists, scholars, and community members to discuss how we can engage with public art to shift the frameworks of representation. We will also examine these issues in terms of the social and political histories of the communities in which they emerged as well as discuss the potential role of new monuments which engage with histories of oppression and prejudice.


This panel aligns with a public event on September 21, 2019 being hosted at Bronx Community College (BCC), Reclaiming the Hall: Amplifying Community Voices at the Hall of Fame, which will feature a day-long art and community event, a related exhibit in the BCC Hall of Fame Gallery, and the creation of curriculum for use by K-12 teachers and the general public.
