New Book Display: Digital Extremism

Everett Cafe Online

Display DesignOur next Everett Cafe book display explores how violent and nonviolent forms of political expression are facilitated through the use of digital medium, often social media. While gaming and dating sites may be used to lure individuals -- youth among them -- to meet, adopt extreme views, and engage in violent activity, the Internet helps accelerate the process by enabling easy communication through different platforms in the absence of physical contact. Given an historically challenging and unsettled time of global pandemic, racial injustices, social distancing or isolation, and loss of employment, individuals may be swept into extreme or radical ways of thinking and doing, only as technology companies strengthen their use and continue to reap benefits, largely through advertising.

In the wake of January's unprecedented attack on our nation's capital, a riot that disrupted Congress from formalizing the 2020 presidential election results, Digital Extremism features titles that use a variety of lenses. From how social media shapes influence, to the very concept of radical technologies, we seek to encourage educational awareness and deeper conversation.

At the Everett News Cafe, you'll find a new book collection every few weeks that relates to current affairs, education, or learning environments.
