Classroom Resources

In January we highlight subscription databases that are useful in elementary through secondary school classrooms; these resources exemplify models for research at the K-12 level.

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database holds the largest collection of children's and young adult book reviews in the reviewing industry. This resource also offers thematic lists, award listings, and curriculum tools, including lexiles, accelerated reader and reading counts RMPs.

Ebsco E-Book Collection includes hundreds of children's and young adult fiction and nonfiction, as well as study aids in various subjects, in a collection of more than 2.4 million e-books, including 300,000+ DRM-free titles. Ebsco also provides access to "Explora Primary Schools" and "Explora Educator's Edition", which offer topic overviews, news videos, and articles through simple or advanced searching. Educator's Edition also provides curriculum standards for select years for the United States, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom with browse options for subject, and grade.

Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints is the premier online resource covering today's hottest social issues, from capital punishment to immigration to marijuana. This cross-curricular resource supports science, social studies, current events, and language arts.

SIRS Researcher is designed to help novice researchers understand the major issues of the day. Users may explore issues within the categories of Trending Topics and Editors’ Picks, or by selecting from the “Need help choosing a topic?” section, which includes modules for Business & Economics; Civil Rights & Liberties; Communication & Technology; Crime & Punishment; Drugs, Health & Wellness; Environment & Science; Ethics; School, Family & Youth; and World Culture & Politics; and All Leading Issues.

TeachingBooks comprises “263,909 [and counting] resources about children’s and young adult books, including print and media resources for children and teens and in-depth information and analysis for educators and adults.”

Virtual Reference Library includes some 42 subject-specific components of the Gale OneFile suite of resources; In Context files for finding topic overviews; and significant gathering of e-books, journals, literary indexes, and business-related information sources.

ERIC (EBSCO) provides access to education literature and research. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. Content includes journal articles, research reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference papers, dissertations and theses, and books dating back to 1966.
