Join us for an engaging talk on Wednesday, July 14th when Dr. Renee Cherow-O’Leary, Founder and President of Education for the 21st Century, a consulting firm in New York City, speaks on Media for Children and the Changing Nature of Childhood in the 21st Century. Dr. Cherow-O’Leary will pose some philosophical questions based on the latest theories and research about children's absorption in current media and explore how their physical, mental and spiritual health are evolving in response to these media. Drawn from her own practical experience as a curriculum designer, director of research and writer in the world of children's media, this interactive forum will assess the new paradigms of childhood behavior and their impact. An expert in the field, Dr. Cherow-O’Leary develops educational materials for children, parents and teachers in multiple platforms including print, television, web, blogs, gaming and virtual worlds. Her clients include large media organizations such as Disney, PBS, Sprout (Comcast), and HIT Entertainment, Newsweek and The New York Times Newspaper in Education Program as well as non-profit groups and think tanks such as the U.S. Institute of Peace, Storahtelling, Little Creatures Films and the Children's Movement for Creative Education. She was Director of Research in the Magazine Group of the Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) for seven years. She is currently a member of the Community Advisory Board of public radio station, WNYC, and has been a curriculum advisor to Radio Rookies, a youth radio production of the station. Dr. Cherow-O’Leary is also a specialist in media literacy. She was the National Coordinator of "Creating Critical Viewers," an initiative of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that linked educators and broadcasters in cities across America. She also coordinated the National Association for Media Literacy Education’s Research Summit. From 2003-2009, Dr. Cherow-O’Leary was a full-time member of the faculty of English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and taught courses such as "Technologies and Literacies" and "Using Popular Texts in the English Classroom." She was the host at TC of an online talk show called "Peer Review" and worked on a Provost's Grant on digital media and learning. She has also taught at several other universities including Rutgers, City College of New York and NYU and was a high school English teacher at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois and the University of Chicago Lab School. She is a member of the Media Commission of the National Council of the Teachers of English and a speaker at major educational and industry conferences. Where: 305 Russell
