December Staff Picks: Humanizing the Incarcerated
Reading Room, Second Floor
"December 1st marks International Human Rights Day, a crucial moment for reflecting on the rights of all individuals. Unfortunately, one group often excluded from human rights discussions is the incarcerated population. Humanizing the Incarcerated sheds light on the profound impact of mass incarceration, examining the experiences of those who have been incarcerated, individuals working within prisons, and those with friends and family behind bars. From an outsider's perspective, the prison and criminal justice system may be seen as a deterrent to crime. However, by recognizing that incarcerated individuals are our friends, family, and peers, we gain a clearer understanding of the injustices they face, including disparities in treatment, living conditions, and, at times, wrongful convictions."
