A serious and often underreported crime, doxing involves the publication of someone's personal information without their consent via the Internet and with intent to shame, embarrass, intimidate and/or harass. Examples may include releasing personal photos, posting contact details; exposing private or sensitive documents; and encouraging others to use such information unethically. Campus communities, including Columbia University where trucks recently advertised the names and photos of Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian students, are not immune to this unacceptable behavior which triggers and incites more bad or undesirable actions.

While certain information is found within the public domain and / or is obtained legally, it is estimated that tens of millions of Americans have experienced doxing at some point. Recent attacks in educational settings have led to the establishment of working groups and safety apps to centralize points of contact and ensure better online behavior and security.

Anti Doxing: Your Rights and Responsibilities aims to raise awareness of the need for critical media literacy and smart use of the Internet, while offering resources on context, history, challenges, and solutions in online environments. As communications over computer networks grow through various platforms, we urge readers to take an active role in protecting their privacy of information and being responsible digital citizens by reporting bias or conduct related incidents to offices and /or administrators of the College.
