October-November Staff Picks: Making Connections
with a Tribute to Dr. Ruth Westheimer
Making connections in reading is the ability to move from text to self (by connecting the text to your life or experiences); text to text (connecting the text to another text); and text to world (connecting the text to events in the world). In life, making connections is synonymous with building relationships through shared thoughts or experiences, from early infancy to late adulthood, often now through different mediums, the digisphere.
In October Teachers College celebrates 2024 Alumni Awardees, with a special tribute to Dr. Karola Ruth Westheimer (Ed.D. ’70), America's best-known sex counselor, who sought to "live large and make a dent in this world." The beloved Dr. Ruth, an orphan of the Holocaust, loved Teachers College and made long and deep connections here that grew from her learning and life experience, teaching and research.
October-November Staff Picks explores the significance of nurturing relations -- within the family, school, community, society, and the world at large -- through formal and informal educational settings -- and with love, empathy, happiness, mindfulness, and creativity. Works by Dr. Ruth Westheimer inspire us to consider our life and experience; texts on making connections; and the special circumstances of nations, cultures, and religions that call for our greater awareness and need to build relationships.
