April Staff Picks: Boundaries of Consciousness: Science, Spirit, and the Return of Psychedelic Knowledge
Second Floor
"This collection explores consciousness not as a fixed property of the brain, but as something fluid, expanded, and deeply shaped by culture, biology, and lived experience. Bringing together neuroscience, psychedelic research, and ancient knowledge systems, these works trace the resurgence of plant medicines and altered states-- from their roots in indigenous traditions and spiritual practices to their re-emergence within modern clinical science. Psychedelics: substances such as psilocybin, LSD, and ayahuasca that alter perception, mood, and cognition, carry a complex and controversial history of criminalization and cultural tension, yet are now being revisited in modern science as promising tools for understanding consciousness and addressing complex mental health conditions.
Across disciplines, these texts ask a shared question: what happens when the boundaries of perception are loosened? From the neural mechanisms of consciousness to heart-centered understandings of early civilizations, from psychedelic-assisted therapy to ecological and spiritual ways of knowing, this collection reveals that the exploration of consciousness has always moved between science and meaning, evidence and experience. In doing so, it invites us to reconsider not only how we understand the mind-- but how we heal, relate, and exist within a larger, interconnected world."
