February Staff Picks: Catalytic Love
Second Floor
Topic: Catalytic Love: Self-Discovery and Activism as a Result of Love and Loss
“Love was an action, an instinct, a response roused by unplanned moments and small gestures, an inconvenience in someone else’s favor. -- Michelle Zauner, Crying in H Mart.
The ancient Greeks believed there were eight types of love: Eros, Philia, Storge, Agape, Selfless, Ludus, Pragma, Mania, and Philautia. Love can manifest in many forms–from friendship to romance to family.
Love breeds passion, interest, and reflection. This month’s display explores how love presents itself in every facet of life and how love can be a catalyst for self-growth and activism. How does love inspire us to better ourselves and the world around us? How does love persevere in the face of hate, violence, and injustice?
The selected books represent love in manifestations, including grief. With any love, comes loss. Several of the selected books center around grief after lost love, exploring the question: What can we gain from loss? How does love live on after death?
This display rejects the mainstream notions of love and instead recognizes love as a radical action–one that continues to inspire change. This February, we invite you to celebrate love in all facets and reflect on how love has inspired you."
