New Exhibit: Peace in Art: Selections from the Teachers College Historical Art Collections
First Floor
Peace in Art: Selections from the Teachers College Historical Art Collections seeks to encourage peaceful conversations and mindfulness of our ability to practice the art of peace. It is inspired by thoughts on how peace may manifest in our lives, especially as we enter into the new year which often brings hope for a better future.
The mediums are diverse, from pencil and crayon to collage; poster paint to watercolor, tempera, and oil; intaglio to lino cut. Similarly diverse is the content, drawing upon human experience, our relationships with each other and the natural world, and spirituality and religion. Symbols of peace, animals, and states of being are reflected in artworks created by children, as well as adults – some abstractly, others more realistically – from the 1950s through the early 2000s. Their countries of origin include Chile, India, Israel, Japan, Morocco, Russia, Scotland, Ukraine, and the United States.
The Teachers College Art Collection is a resource for both teaching and research. Featured in this display are works from the Federico Castellon Memorial Print Collection; The Ziegfeld Collection of International Children’s Art; The Passow Collection of Israeli Children’s Peace Art; Children’s Art of India; Ukrainian Children’s Art Collection; and Angiola Churchill Collection.
