October Staff Picks: Roots and Routes

Second Floor

Topic: Roots and Routes: Writings on Home, Movement, and Identity

For each individual, the word “home” elicits a smattering of associations and leaves in its wake intimate understandings of places, people, foods, languages, feelings, objects, and cultures. Yet, wherever there is a concept of home, there is also movement—a force that stretches home’s reach and complicates its definition.

This selection of works explores various iterations of home and movement, conceptualized by sociologist Paul Gilroy as “Roots” and “Routes” in his 1993 work The Black Atlantic, and considers how these intertwined forces influence the formation of identity.
