On April 6th, 1909 American explorer and officer in the United States Navy, Robert Edwin Peary (1856-1920) thought he reached the North Pole, after sledging with his team on a third attempt after prolonged adverse weather and ice conditions.

Today In History: Webster's Dictionary Is Published

On April 14th, 1828 Noah Webster (October 16, 1758 – May 28, 1843), known as the "Father of American Scholarship and Education," published The American Dictionary of the English Language. This important work introduced over 10,000 "Americanisms" to the English language, representing a cultural departure from standard English dictionaries, including his very own Compendious Dictionary of the English Language (1806).

Today In History: The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

On April 18, 1775 Boston silversmith and patriot Paul Revere rode by horse to alert the colonial militia of the British forces about to attack in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts -- battles fought the following day that signified the start the American Revolutionary War. First, Revere placed two lanterns on the Old North Church steeple in Boston to warn citizens and patriots that troops had left Boston and were crossing the Charles River.

Today In History: The Library of Congress Is Established

The Library of Congress, our nation's oldest federal institution, was established on April 24, 1800, when President John Adams signed an Act of Congress. The legislation provided for the transfer of the seat of government from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington, D.C.
